Belief in the Day of Judgment
Pillar 5
What is the Day of Judgment?
The fifth pillar of Iman is the belief in Yawm al-Qiyamah, the Day of Resurrection or Day of Judgment. Muslims believe that on this day, all of humanity will be resurrected to be held accountable for their deeds before Allah. This world is a temporary test, and the life to come is eternal.
The Events of the Day
The Quran and Sunnah describe the major events of this day, including the sounding of the trumpet, the resurrection of the dead, the gathering of all people, the presentation of one's book of deeds, and the weighing of deeds on the Mizan (the scale). Every action, thought, and intention from one's life will be brought to account.
Heaven (Jannah) and Hell (Jahannam)
Based on the final judgment, individuals will be consigned to their eternal abode. Those whose good deeds outweigh their bad will be granted entry into Jannah (Paradise), a state of everlasting peace, joy, and closeness to Allah. Those whose evil deeds prevail will be sent to Jahannam (Hell), a place of punishment and suffering. Belief in the Day of Judgment serves as a powerful moral compass, motivating Muslims to live righteous lives and be mindful of their ultimate accountability to God.
