Belief in Allah (Tawhid)

Pillar 1

The Oneness of Allah (Tawhid)

The most fundamental principle of Iman is the belief in the absolute oneness of Allah, a concept known as Tawhid. It signifies that there is only one God, the sole Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of the universe. This belief rejects any form of polytheism or associating partners with Allah.

Attributes of Allah

Muslims believe that Allah possesses all perfect attributes. The Quran and the Sunnah describe His names and attributes, such as:

  • Al-Ahad (The One): Emphasizing His indivisible oneness.
  • As-Samad (The Eternal, Absolute): He is self-sufficient, and all of creation depends on Him.
  • Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living): He is eternal and His life has no beginning or end.
  • Al-Qayyum (The Self-Sustaining): He sustains and upholds everything in existence.
  • Ar-Rahman (The Most Gracious), Ar-Rahim (The Most Merciful): Highlighting His boundless mercy and compassion.

Belief in Allah involves accepting these attributes as they are described, without comparing them to human characteristics.

Worship and Devotion

As a consequence of Tawhid, all acts of worship—such as prayer, supplication, and sacrifice—must be directed exclusively to Allah. This belief forms the foundation of a Muslim's relationship with God, fostering humility, gratitude, and a sense of purpose.
